As they navigate the often-difficult transition from adolescence to adulthood, students participate in programming, clinical services, academics, and community connections/activities based on their individual needs.

Virtual Tour Young Adult Residential Treatment

  • Program Steps & Advancement

Students participate in a four-step program designed for young adults. Expectations, therapeutic assignments, and opportunities for each step are clearly defined in an effort to support our students need for predictability. Initially students work on participation, taking responsibility, being respectful and basic daily living skills. The steps then build on themselves preparing students to self-advocate, be accountable, communicate more effectively, establish healthy relationships, increase coping skills, safely navigate and access the community, and find what makes them happy.

As young adults, students are expected to take an active role in their treatment. They participate in developing their treatment plan, setting goals and reviewing their overall progress as a member of the treatment team. During their Treatment Plan Reviews they are encouraged to advocate for themselves, build on their strengths, and seek support for their limitations.

  • Supervision & Support

The healthy combination of both a home and school environment at Waterfall Canyon Academy encourages consistently good daily habits and provides structure and support for our students. Students tend to thrive and achieve personal growth as they learn to manage their time and abide by a predictable schedule.

  • Social Skills

Our students may struggle with social interactions, communication, and understanding social cues. It’s important to note that each person is unique, and their experiences and challenges can vary widely. The social challenges are assisted through therapy by focusing on daily social situations, understanding nonverbal cues, and process effective communication skills. Additionally, our program has created an inclusive and understanding environment. By promoting acceptance, patience, and empathy, we can help our students feel more comfortable and supported in social settings. Developing social skills empowers individuals who have been diagnosed with or presents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to become more self-assured and independent.

  • Daily Living Skills

Developing daily living skills will assist students to take care of their personal needs, manage their daily routines, and navigate their environment with greater confidence. Having well-developed daily living skills enhances social inclusion for our students. When they can independently manage their personal care, participate in household tasks, and engage in community activities, they are better equipped to interact with others and participate fully in social settings.

Our Daily Living Skill Services focus on the essential skills to assist our students struggling with gaining and maintaining a daily schedule. Skills such as time management, organization, and personal hygiene are important while attending school, in a workplace, or at a community activity. Developing these skills can increase the student’s chances for success with friendships, co-workers, and in the community.

Staff Facilitated Classes

Students participate in daily groups to assist in developing personal social and daily living skills that will help them be productive members of their community and navigate relationships throughout their lives. WCA staff are trained to facilitate structured, productive, classes; encouraging a safe environment for learning and sharing.

Community Based Activities

Our residential program provides daily opportunities to socialize in the community. The program is designed to help guide our students with successful experiences participating in physical, cultural, and social events and activities. While at Waterfall Canyon Academy, students learn to use their community as a resource.

  • Recreational Activities

During recreational activities staff model/teach students how to problem-solve, work as a team, and use communication skills to assist appropriate interactions on these daily outings. In addition to basic activities such as basketball, soccer, working out at the gym and running/walking, we challenge students with new activities such as snowboarding, skiing, hiking, camping, fishing, and playing on community recreational teams all of which build self-esteem and provide an opportunity to apply/practice social skills.

  • Social Activities

Social activities are designed to support emotional well-being and facilitate healthy interactions with peers. Structured social outings to local attractions, movie nights, and game nights provide opportunities for our students to bond with their peers in a supportive and supervised environment. These social activities not only offer enjoyable experiences but also help students learn essential social skills, build self-confidence, and foster a sense of belonging within their community.

  • Service-Based Activities

Our community-based program also includes and encourages students to participate in service-based activities. Students can be seen assisting the elderly in care centers, stocking the shelves at the food bank, walking the animals at our county animal shelter, or picking up trash in the local parks. Such experiences help students develop empathy for and understanding of others and provides them with the opportunity to demonstrate appropriate social skills, coping skills, and interpersonal skills as well as develop new talents.
