The Plan for Success serves as the road-map for the goals the student wishes to achieve while in Independent Living. Addressed in this plan are goals regarding education, vocation, employment, finances, transportation, and future living arrangements. This plan will be reviewed every two weeks by our student, his Community Advisor, and our Program Supervisor at Independent Living to ensure progress toward achieving the goals that have been set and to determine if modifications may be necessary.
The entire treatment team is involved in helping our students formulate their goals and they are also the support system for successful completion of the plan. It is imperative that each student takes ownership of their Plan for Success once they have one established. A reasonable amount of time is offered to each of our students in order for them to carefully and thoughtfully create an individual Plan for Success. WCA will assist in exploring every option that our students wish to pursue!
Our Independent Living Program consists of 13 fully equipped studio apartments, a common area, staff offices, and onsite laundry facilities. It is centrally located on Historic Jefferson Avenue. Students are within walking distance of the amenities of downtown Ogden and The Junction. http://www.ogdenjunction.com/ The building is exclusively used for our young men and is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including awake overnight staff.
Every student at Waterfall Canyon Academy’s Independent Living will have a support team. In addition to parent(s)/family members and existing supporting relationships, each student will have a Primary Therapist, a Program Coordinator, a Community Advisor, a Residential Advisor, and a Medication Management Provider (when appropriate). As a young adult, it is important for the student to be invested, recognizing themselves as the key player of the support team.
A main component to the Independent Living Program is Budgeting. Students learn personal responsibility for their finances and accountability for their expenses and spending. They budget for groceries, personal needs, and discretionary spending. Prior to completion of the program students will learn to function within a set budget and have the opportunity to pay rent, utilities and other living expenses along with saving and planning for their future.
With the assistance of their Support Team, students will implement an education or employment component into their Plan for Success. Students evaluate their strengths, abilities, and personal interests as they consider finding a job, participating in vocational training, or attending an educational institution. Every student’s personal journey to be as independent and self-reliant as possible is different. WCA helps each student recognize their potential and need for continuing growth and skills development.
Independent Living students participate in multiple social/recreational activities each week that are organized by our supportive staff and or other students in the program. In addition there are staff facilitated classes offered Sunday through Wednesday evenings that focus on Daily Living Skills, Social Skills, Life Management, Current Events, and Weekly Planning. It is expected students are active participants in the Independent Living Program community where they can develop social skills, cultivate relationships, and establish a healthy interactive support system.
Students will explore various activities they can participate and engage in outside of Waterfall Canyon Academy. Some of the key purposes for this are: Increasing confidence, developing and strengthening social abilities, character building, and an overall increased sense of independence and self-reliance.
